Urbenville - Fri 18/8 to Sun 20/8/17

Thu Jul 27, 2017 4:51 pm

What better place to spend our first camping trip for the semester than at Urbenville.
Now with 4 crags and a river at our door step, what more could you want!

Image

Location:
Just over the NSW border. About a 2 - 2.5 hour drive. The normal route takes you via Beaudesert, through Rathdowney, over the border to Woodenbong (where you need to turn left!) and into the tiny town of Urbenville. Heading straight through the town puts you onto the road to the Tooloom falls turn-off (about 2km?) and then a short drive along the dirt (drive respectfully, it passes through private property and there will be cattle and kangaroos on the road) road to the campground. Google maps link here.

Climbs:
There used to be only two crags surrounding Urbenville, but with recent bolting efforts, this has now expanded to four! The Pines (so named because it’s in a pine plantation) AKA Battery Hill has a variety of single pitch (mostly) sport routes in a variety of grades, including the ever popular test-piece Ginsu (24). The Pines features an easy walk-in through the pine plantation and quite textured rock.

The second, most well know crag is The Crown. Whether it is named after the Urbenville pub or vice-versa is unknown. Rather unusually, the walk-in takes you through the grounds of the local sewerage treatment plant (past the sign asking you not to swim in the sewerage ponds... although I'm not going to stop you). The Crown is true knee-quivering, toe-squirming, featureless slab. With the 'holds' being any time where there is slightly more texture/friction/colour than the surrounding rock, or potentially nothing, where you end up just hugging the rock. The Crown is home to a couple of nice multi-pitches including the perennial 75m long classic 'fantastic' (19 or 16 if you're sandbagging Bjorn) and its neighbouring 'new' 73m multipitch put up by two past Cliffhangers club presidents 'Genocide and Caramel' (18).

The newer crags are Vesuvius and Spot-X. Vesuvius is located in the same direction as The Pines, although quite a bit of a longer walk, whilst Spot-X is on the other side of the crown. Both are home to some harder grades, nicely overhanging, and feature less obvious walk-ins than the more established crags, although the quality of both crags are still great.

What to bring:
-Tent
-Mattress
-Sleeping bag and clothing suitable for cold weather!
-Food for all meals
-Water for the whole trip. 3L per day should do. This is for drinking, cooking and cleaning. (There isn’t any water there)
-Other helpful things eg. camping chair, booze, headtorch

Post up if you need something or are happy to share your stuff. This will help you coordinate your own camping gear between yourselves.

Climbing gear:
For those needing gear make sure you get in contact with the Quartermasters (Josiah & Andrew) at least 2 KP sessions before the trip, this will allow for collection time.

Transport:
We’ll be heading down either Friday or early Saturday. So get ready for 2 full days of climbing with sick chills around the camp fire between. We’ll be returning to Brisbane late Sunday.
Please post up when you would like to go down, Friday or Saturday morning. Would recommend coming down Friday to avoid getting up super early on the Saturday morning.
Please bring a $10 fuel contribution each way for your driver.

Fill out the details below, sign ups close Thurs 17th 12 noon with transport posted shortly afterwards.
