North Brisbane Bouldering Gym

Fri Nov 11, 2011 7:28 am

Hi one an all,

I am seeking everyones opinion on the opening of a bouldering specific indoor climbing wall in the South of Queensland. This is very much a idea in its infancy but all great things must start from somewhere. The regions i am trying to focus on thus far are North Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. I chose these because I think they have an active climbing community whose cranking needs are not currently met by the climbing gyms in the region.

The dream is to make it to a very high standard with regularly interchanged and professionally set routes that can compete at an international level. And i am thinking high ball with the wall going up to 4.8m. Ideally it would be a small scale model of a new gym that has just opened in Scotland. TCA Glasgow.

What i am hoping to get from you is ideas, comments, constructive criticism about building a gym in these regions. What do you think of the bouldering scene? Do you think there is a climbing community to support such a thing, Do you think that the gyms in these regions already provide adequate services? Are their certain restrictions to building climbing walls in Australia. Do you have a crazy/fantastic idea that you have always wanted to incorporate into a wall?

I would love to hear from you all.

Thanks Brad

http://www.tca-glasgow.com/ That looks mad!

I'd appreciate something on the north side. Redcliffe is good :)

I'm not sure how large the market is for a bouldering only gym but if you made it like some 24 hour gyms where there isn't always somebody working there, you just swipe your card to get in then that might keep costs low enough to make it viable.

Really good idea. Currently living in frankfurt, DE and visit a bouldering only gym quite often (blockwerk mainz). I would say it gets as much use as the full climbing gym that's much closer.

I think so long as you marketed it the right way it would be feasible, and had plenty of variety and fairly frequently changing routes. I think as far as there being the market for it, as a cheaper, less expensive and more 'free' (without ropes and so on) alternative to normal roped climbing, it would be great.

Do you already have a location in mind?
